How Drain Tube After Surgery Is Used

By Aimee Schwartz

Surgeries have been around for several years now. And as the equipment have improved, you can also see that there is an improvement when it comes to the procedures and the speed of the operation. As you can notice in most movies, there are always several equipment and tools being used in surgeries. There are several tools being used during the actual operation and there are those that are applied right after the operation is done.

For example, there are surgical drains. You can see that there are times when drain tube after surgery is attached near the place where they performed the operation. It is still being used today. However, there are always debates regarding the need for it. Of course, there are also risks to be considered when using this. And because of the many unresolved issues, the medical community has different stand points in this.

The drain tube is attached to make sure that the fluids do not accumulate in certain spaces, especially in the parts where the operation was conducted. This is also done to drain gas. Aside from possible complications, this is can also be the source of infections.

When it comes to choosing whether the tube should be connected or not, the decision would be based on the direction of the surgeon in charge. They are also the ones to decide which part of the body will the tube be attached. Aside from that, the type of the drain will be decided by the surgeon as well. These are crucial points in ensuring that drains would work as they are supposed to.

There are different types of drains that could be used. The difference usually lies in the mechanism that it has when it comes to sucking out the excess liquids and gas. But there are specific types that are used for liquids only and there are also those that are used for other substances. The operating surgeon should determine the type based on what probable substance might be accumulating in the area.

The simplest mechanism comes in the form of both drains and suction pumps. The pump is set to a certain pressure. This is what is used to suck out the excess substance inside. When it is not used, it can be turned off. However, there are rare cases when the tube has to work continuously to ensure that no liquid can possibly collect inside.

As physicians and patients, you should be aware of when the tube is dislodged from the body. A sudden movement may do this. If it is not fixed immediately, it might be the cause of an infection. The staff should be especially careful when they are trying to transfer the patient from one bed to another. This is when the dislodging thing usually happens.

When a tube is attached, there are different purposes for it aside from the prevent of fluid accumulation. There is a machine that records and measures the amount of substance being drained. You have to know that these substances are also essential to the body. They are just posing problems by accumulating in the wrong place. So they have to be replaced through proper fluid intake somehow.

Fluid drainage amount should be measure as well. This is to determine if there are any changes. This might indicate that the certain area might be suffering from complications.
