After Lasik San Antonio Patients Can Look Life In The Eye Again

By Maria Bailey

For somebody that can see it must be difficult to even imagine life with very poor eye sight or even none at all. So many pleasures in life depends upon the ability to see. It is difficult to accept a life where it is necessary to constantly depend upon others. Thank goodness that many eye conditions can be treated. For example, with lasik San Antonio patients often not only see better than they have before the treatment, but better than they have for a long time.

Laser eye surgery has become extremely popular. Since the late nineteen nineties more than 28 million people underwent this procedure. The surgery involves the shaping of the cornea in order to ensure that the light focuses correctly on the retina at the back of the eye. It is especially beneficial to patients that suffer from either near of far sightedness and for the correction of astigmatism.

Many clinical studies have shown that this procedure is safe and, in the vast majority of cases, completely successful. This is echoed by the fact that more than 95 per cent of patients have expressed their complete satisfaction with the results. The procedure is performed in the surgery and only a local anaesthetic is used. There are no stitches and the patient can go home almost immediately.

Many medical insurance companies will cover the bill for this procedure, but not everybody is covered by insurance. The cost of surgery can be high but millions of satisfied patients say that the very fact that they can see again and that they can enjoy life the way they used to cannot be compared with any amount of money. In fact, the ongoing cost of periodic eye tests and new glasses or contact lenses makes surgery viable in the long term.

Very few complications have been reported but there are always risks when invasive surgery is performed. A few patients reported that they experienced a type of star burst vision while others say the see with a halo effect. Infection is extremely rare but if it develops it can be serious, even leading to blindness. Dryness of the eyes is also a common complaint but this is normal and it can be treated with eye drops.

Surgeons instruct their patients to follow a few basic precautions for a few days after surgery. They need to wear eye patches in bed to prevent them from scratching or rubbing they eyes whilst sleeping. They need to complete a full course of antibiotics and they must wear efficient dark glasses when they are out of doors. Patients that ignore these instructions are more likely to develop complications.

Care should be taken when choosing a surgeon. He should be very experienced in performing this specific procedure and he should have special training in the use of the equipment. All reputable surgeons will make sure that prospective patients know exactly what the risks are, what to expect prior to and after surgery and what the prognosis for success is.

Laser treatment has benefited millions of people. Restoring the ability to see must be one of the most empowering experiences any medical specialist can have. Ongoing research will ensure that the risk of complications will be reduced even further.
