Things To Ponder If Utilizing Calendula For Perioral Dermatitis

By Stacey Leach

Many sufferers have started to use calendula for perioral dermatitis treatment, usually as a complement to more conventional forms of medication. This form of dermatitis is one to which adult women appear especially susceptible. The condition is marked by a skin inflammation, usually around the mouth, which is often mistaken for acne.

This rash and inflammation is often accompanied by what feels like burning on the skin. Bumps may also appear as part of the rash, and these often contain pus. This rash can also occur around the forehead and the nose, which is why it can often be mistaken for acne, though blackheads and whiteheads are not part of the symptoms.

Itchiness is also reported in some sufferers, though this is by no means universal and often does not occur at all. The condition can be relatively simply diagnosed by a medical professional by simply looking at the affected areas. A conventional medic will often prescribe creams or salves which contain chemicals such as Clindamycin, Sodium Sulfacetamide with sulfur, Tacrolimus or Benzoyl peroxide, though many other compounds are also used.

The use of oral antibiotics to combat this kind of skin infection is also common. Treating it can be a very lengthy process though, and months of treatment are often required before the condition will eventually clear. The use of steroids is to avoided at all costs, as much evidence points to the use of steroidal face creams as a possible trigger for the onset of the condition.

Physicians may also recommend that patients use sun screens or moisturizers to help prevent the condition occurring. There has also been some speculation that using toothpaste with added fluoride, or which has certain tartar-fighting chemicals in it, can cause or exacerbate the condition. Conventional treatments can take a long time to work, so many people have turned to calendula as a remedy.

Calendula has anti-fungal and anti-bacterial qualities which may help it treat dermatitis of this kind. It is a healing promotion agent, possesses moisturizing qualities and can also work to prevent scarring. No safety issues when it is being used alongside other treatments have been identified.

That still means that some caution should still inform any decision when thinking about using calendula for perioral dermatitis. Different people can have different reactions to substances. For this reason, it always best to consult a properly qualified medical practitioner before embarking on any kind of treatment for the condition.
