Types Of Treatment For Heroin Addiction

By Henry Williams

Drug abuse is rampant in the society today, the society has lost promising young people to substance abuse. One of the most abused drugs in recent history is heroin. Those who are caught using it are taken to a mandatory treatment for heroin addiction. This is to help salvage the men and women in the society who should be productive. This drug is very easy to get hooked to, it only starts with an injection and there is no turning back. If the problem is realized early enough, then treatment should be the next best thing.

In order to combat this menace, one can use long-term residential treatment. This is whereby an addict commits himself or herself for six months to a year in a residential area. Care is provided daily and the model commonly used is the therapeutic community. The main purpose of this method is to help one get back to the community a better person. The social skills of an individual are improved over the period. The addict is given employment training, ways to avoid drugs and regular counselling.

Heroin addicts can also be placed on a short-term residential schedule whereby the patient is treated using a modified twelve step method. The treatment is hospital based and it takes a period of one to two months to complete. An addict is educated on how to stay sober and avoid drug dependency. It is important for a patient to come back after the period and enroll in a self-help group to get support from other rehabilitated people.

There is an inexpensive way to treat heroin addicts called the outpatient program. This method is very convenient for those who have jobs. It has proven to be very effective for those who are dedicated to the cause. It deals with both drug rehabilitation and getting someone to fit into the society better. The counselor advises the victims on how to fight the temptations of drugs.

Individual counselling is also a way of treating an addict. It deals helps individuals to combat substance abuse and trains them how to improve their life once the therapy is complete. The lessons one takes under the guidance of a counselor include getting employment, reconciling with family members, avoiding bad company among others. One is trained how to refrain from the drug and what to do when the temptation arises.

Group counselling is also the most common method used to treat addicts. A group of heroin addicts is brought together where they share what they have undergone through, the cons of drugs, and what they need to do to quit. With proper guidance, they recover.

There are those who are affected by the drug and even after therapy, the urge to have some heroin becomes too strong. A medication is administered to them on a daily basis. This medicine is called methadone. It kills the nerve that creates the cravings.

In order to get quality help in a rehabilitation center, one must be ready to get help. It is advisable that an individual stays away from this drug altogether. Costs incurred trying to treat a person for addiction could be put to better use.
