Healthcare: What Matters The Most About Billing
It is important to keep up to date with new changes happening in ICD-10. Most coders say that they don't understand ICD-10 completely. It is not easy to find the right alphanumeric codes for any illness. It takes time, experience and education. Many billers today are learning a lot from Facebook and Twitter. Believe it or not, many coding companies are posting helpful tips that allow you to learn more about billing. It is important to write these tips down in a journal and try to correct any billing errors that you may have made previously.
One of my favorite publications in the medical billing and coding field is the BC Advantage. The journal offers information on the changes that is happening in the medical billing field. The last time I checked, the subscription was around $55.00 a year. The journal comes out monthly and it even had 12 free CEUs per year. It is an informative journal if you want to know about the changes happening with ICD-10 and you need to go back to school and update your skills. In billing, you should take at least 1 course per year to familiarize yourself with what is current.
I also like a journal called For The Record. This is a great journal if you are wanting to find where all of the jobs are at. You can often find this magazine throughout the country for free. Sometimes, you have to pay a small fee of $13.00 per year. It is best to check with the magazine in order to find out more details. You can also find some of the articles on their website as well. This magazine is published bi-weekly and offers a host of information. It is important to read a lot when you have time. You will only become a better biller because of it.
Another great organization is the American Association of Clinical coders and auditors. This was founded a little bit later than the HBMA and is fairly new. It was founded in 2003. It has a main focus on registered nurses and their interaction with coding professionals. This association has a certification for nurses. It has a coding and auditing certification. If you want to become a member, you should more than likely be a registered nurse. Other healthcare providers are welcome as well. It also focuses on ICD-10 and how it is effecting medical practices.
Healthcare is a topic that is confusing to a lot of people. Many schools today are educating coders on anatomy and physiology because you need these skills in order to be successful. In life, you have to find out what you want and go after it. If you would like to read a few good blogs, you may want to try the following: Allen School Blog, Capture Billing, CRT Medical Systems and Claim Care. Hopefully you will obtain knowledge as you move forward in your medical billing career. The future depends on you knowing how to bill and code correctly. A lot of doctors these days are closing their practices because they cannot collect enough profits to stay open.
