Treatment Programs: Helping People With Heroin Addiction

By Yulanda Pearle

If you happened to watch 20/20 the other night, you would easily see that there is a heroin epidemic happening in the United States of America. This Epidemic is not as easy to talk about as most people think it is. In actuality, heroin is something that is destroying the lives of thousands of men and women all over the world. If you are like me, you probably want to know why this is happening. Each year, thousands of men and women are being treated for heroin addiction at more than 18,000 drug rehabs across the USA. Most of the addicts are from white suburban neighborhoods in the United States. However, why is this happening?

Desperate families are trying hard to figure out how they can put their loved one in treatment. Many treatment programs are free, but require you to pay for detox. Detox often costs around $7,000 a week to come off of a drug like heroin. Even though a free treatment center will allow you to stay in their facility on a scholarship for 30 days, you still have to pay for detox. Detox is when a sober clinic gives you legal psychiatric medication to help ween you off heroin. It takes away the painful effects of heroin withdrawal that most people feel.

Medical billing companies understand that there is a lot of money that involved in treating a patient. Families that don't have good medical insurance for treatment and cash to pay, have a difficult time sending their loved one into a program. Many clients across the USA say that they are trying to get help and simply cannot. Most treatment centers will send you away because the demand is so high. In an average 30 bed inpatient facility, only around 2 to 5 scholarships are given to an addict each month. A scholarship is a free stay at their facility. It is often hard to treat someone that needs help.

Medical billing companies are having trouble with inpatient billing these days. Most medical billers will tell you that they cannot get good reimbursements on claims. If a treatment center is expecting a check for $25,000 from the insurance company to pay for treatment, they are often only receiving $7,000 or $8,000. At this rate, treatment centers cannot afford to stay open. Many treatment centers have already closed down in the state of Florida because they simply cannot afford to stay open. Medical billers know that this is a problem that is not easily solved.

It is not easy to look at your situation and afford it. You must realize that treatment takes a family effort. If the addict does not have medical insurance to pay for treatment, the family should first call a treatment center and have they put together a package for you in order to get help. Once you find yourself growing and learning more about treatment, you begin to have hope. Getting help is not impossible. However, it often takes creative effort in order to find a treatment program that works right for you.
