Addiction to heroin is harmful as it causes the addicts to have effects like low sex capacity, disruption of menstrual flow in women, inflammation of gums, weak body immune systems, impotence and contraction of dangerous diseases like AIDS due to needle sharing just to point out a few. This treatment is therefore very important.

The treatment includes both behavioral and pharmacological treatments. The pharmacological treatment or the medication enables the user to retain the treatment program, reduce cravings, decrease the use of the drug, criminal activities and help eliminate withdrawal symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, nausea and pain. Hence, these medications are very important to the addicts trying to quit the use of heroin.

Behavioral treatments or therapies can be in an outpatient or residential kind of settings. The first step to this treatment is detoxification or what people call the withdrawal process. The patient here avoids intake of heroin and this brings many withdrawal symptoms and here is where medication is prescribed to help the addicts deal with them effectively and within a short span of time since some may be severe.

The second step is called the therapy stage in the behavioral treatment process. It involves counseling sessions to the patient where they are made aware of how to deal with people or situations that may make them feel the need to use it again. The third and last step to this process is the maintenance stage where the counselors make follow-ups to the patients to make sure they maintain a heroin-free life.

Reduction in the spread of deadly diseases like Hepatitis C and AIDS is achieved through the treatment of this drug addiction as the heroin addicts are prone to risky sexual behaviors and they most of the time use the same needle. Many deaths are prevented and many lives saved through this. Since also many crimes result from addiction, it helps cut down on them and this leads to peace in the communities.

Both long and short term benefits result from this treatment like the user gets freedom from the heroin addiction and dependency and health of that person improves. Better, happy and productive lives are lived by the former addicts through the addiction treatment. The families of the addicts are also provided with counseling on this problem and ways to deal with drug addicts and this benefit them greatly.

Finally, it is very important to treat heroin addiction and encourage the addicts to go for treatment as this addiction not only affects the users but also the society at large. Everyone should be in the forefront in eradication of drug abuse as it is a harmful disease. We should also be aware that treatment of drug addiction is important but its prevention is even far much better.
